Family fun on ice
In 2018, Live Wide Open gives a weekly reason why we love living in west central Minnesota. My favorite so far? “Embrace the Cold!”
Anyone can do it. Just last week I ran into a fellow who was experiencing his first winter ever, having moved here last fall. This “southerner” wasn’t only embracing the cold, he was downright giddy about it!
I stopped by the Fergus Falls Lake Alice party last Sunday before the Vikings’ NFC championship game (insert your own comment here). People had the SKOL! chant going, families were out on the ice, a wide walking/skiing/skating trail circled lake, fires were built for free s’mores, the Trowbridge Creek Zoo near Vergas brought animals and you could take a carriage ride down the street. More than 500 hundred braved the cold and ice to be part of the fun.
I’m anxious to see Detroit Lakes Ice Palace when it is completed in February! Talk about an amazing piece of architecture…or is it art? Nonetheless, my wife Kitt and I will be making a trip up there to check it out and we will certainly wait until after dark to see the ice palace lit up.
We missed the big snowfall that hit the Twin Cities last weekend; I’m a little disappointed because there hasn’t been a good snowfamily created in our yard for years! You’ll see a photo of two families, mine and the snow family (with their dog) that sprouted a few years back.
West central Minnesota is a special place to play outdoors year-round so embrace the cold! Get outside!
