Tom and Ann share their love of their hometown

One of the perks of promoting Live Wide Open has to be meeting people in great places.

Lowell Ness owns and operates the Lariat Bar & Grill in Cyrus where Tom, Ann and I met for a great lunch! We can vouch for the burgers!

I met Ann and Tom Beuckens from Starbuck a while back. Tom heads up the local chamber of commerce. Ann works at the Hometown Community Bank in nearby Cyrus (can you beat that name??!). We enjoyed a hamburger lunch at Cyrus’ Lariat Bar & Grill and they shared stories of growing up and living there.

Yes, they grew up, met and married within shouting distance of Starbuck. The Beuckens now live at the edge of town on 850 acres.

They are happy to share the story of a shy guy and a girl who took a chance at a wedding dance. Yes, it sounds like something you’d see in a movie and one can’t help but smile during the telling.

I often share stories of people who recently relocated to a town and I’m often struck by the passion they have for their new home. I could be quoted saying that when we live in a place for a long time, we tend to forget what we love about where we live.

There’s exceptions to that rule because Tom and Ann haven’t forgotten one bit.

In fact, Tom is such a promoter of Starbuck that you’ll find him out and about, running the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce and basically promoting the Starbuck way of life. Tom, in his understated way, says Starbuck is “nice.” “It has a nice setting and nice people,” he smiles.

For her part, Ann mentions all the support in the community. “People are willing to pitch in and help” when something is needed, she said.

Getting to know people like the Beuckens reminds you why our towns so special!
