Visit this amazing little berry farm near New York Mills
by Isabel, Summer Intern
Before strawberry season came to a close I was luckily able visit the beautiful Otter Berry Farm near New York Mills, Minnesota.
The goal for owners Kris and Cordell Huebsch is to grow delicious and nutritious fruit without the overuse of chemicals. This farm truly has it all, as at different times of the year they have strawberries, raspberries or a corn maze. Strawberry season is from Mid-June until Early-July. Raspberry season is late August to October. The amazing corn maze (corny, I know!) is open on weekends in September and October. Better plan a corn maze trip now!
On their farm they also have various farm animals, including the resident “unicorn” Sabrina, which Clara and Isabel (Kris and Cordell’s daughters) were nice enough to introduce to me while hosting me on an amazing tour of the facilities. Clara and Isabel (isn’t Isabel a beautiful name!) also showed me their favorite strawberry picking spots and the small playground that is located on the farm.
Most interesting to me was to hear about their long family history on the farm.
The land was acquired by Cordell’s family in the early 1800s and has been in the family ever since. The current office was built in 1927 by Cordell’s great grandfather and grandfather as a grainery. Since then it has been a horse stable before turning into the Otter Berry “strawberry office.”
When you visit top take the corn maze challenge, see if you can find the year 1927 carved onto the office floor!
And as their website claims, I can confirm this place is “berry” fun indeed!
